We’re loving our autumnal golf, but it won’t be here for long!

One glance around and you get to take in a lush mix of colours in the trees. Plus, there’s something very special about teeing off on a bright, misty morning only to see how quickly the mist evaporates as the sun rises.

On such misty mornings when the ground is fresh with dew, it’s very satisfying to watch the ball trail to the hole as you putt between the delicate leaves and twigs that lie scattered on the greens.

That being said, we’re well into autumn and winter is very nearly here. The nature of the winter climate very much changes how the game is played. In summer, the grass is very fine and pleasant to stand on, but the winter ground is much harsher and demands you come equipped with some footwear that’s up to the task.

How winter changes the game

As the seasons turn from Autumn to Winter, the temperature drops, and a moistness persists in the air. This affects each section of the course. The fairways are often wet and feel claggy underfoot, and if you’re venturing into the rough, you can expect the grass to be soggy and overgrown compared to Summer golf.

The moisture in the air tends to restrict ball distance, and the tees are often set forward to compensate for this loss of distance and to protect the main tee box from suffering seasonal damage. The greens too may be slower due to the increase in moisture.

This doesn’t mean playing golf throughout winter is not enjoyable however! Some of the best rounds occur when a bright wintry sun starts poking through the clouds, and you get to witness majestic rainbows rising above the morning mist.

These seasonal changes naturally make it necessary for you to have a sturdy underfoot grip as you make your way around the golf course. While we’ll all need to be making some adjustments to how we prepare for golf over the winter, you’ll be ready from the get-go when you head out in the latest winter golf shoes from FootJoy.
